Smooth Ambler is a really cool, independent distillery that was opened in the hills of West Virginia. The distillery was started and is still run by owner/master distiller, John Little – the man with the big plans.
Knowing that they have their work cut out for them to compete with the vast amounts of storied distilleries in Kentucky, the “little guys” at Smooth Ambler bust their butts day in, day out and every time I visit there, I’m more and more impressed by the quality. Critics have taken notice too as it consistently finds its way onto lists of ‘Top Non-Kentucky Bourbon’.
I tasted 12 barrels with John the last time I was down there & I could have selected 2 or 3 that would be worthy. The one that I walked away with was the best tasting single barrel that I have ever sampled from a small craft distiller. Especially when you consider that this is a full proof bourbon under 50 bucks!! Plus, it has a label so ugly that it’s actually awesome. This is a throw back for sure.

2019 WE CS #7
97 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Far Niente’s beloved Napa Valley Cabernet comes from a who’s who of the best vineyard sites throughout Napa Valley. It’s a seamless Cabernet blend sourced from Oakville, Stag’s Leap, Diamond Mountain, St. Helena, Calistoga, Oak Knoll and the winery’s estate fruit in Yountville. The 2021 vintage is a particular high note – it’s a must-have for Big Red, Napa and Cabernet lovers.
Rich and creamy notes of toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, and fresh baked Bundt cake immediately flood the sense’s as soon as you pop this one open. Bottled at 100-Proof, you get a little bit of heat on the front palate followed by rich oak, leather and freshly baked bread. As it starts to open, you get some sweeter, creamy vanilla notes that cream in as well as campfire s’mores and a dash of pepper. The finish is long, and a bit spicy which leaves a memorable aftertaste and leaves you wanting more.

“Stunning stuff, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label offers a full-bodied, deep, majestic style as well as beautiful aromatics of creme de cassis, violets, flowers, and nicely integrated background oak. It has ultra-fine tannins, flawless balance, and a regal, age-worthy style that has so much to love. It, however, is not going to be for the instant gratification crowd and this actually shut down pretty quickly with air. I would hide bottle for 4-6 years and it’s going to cruise over the following two decades in cold cellars.”
It’s super big and lush with inviting aromas of dark cherry and plum conserve. It’s rich and dense on the palate with velvety dark chocolate notes, blueberry, blackberries, and espresso balanced by well-integrated tannins. It’s a full-bodied Paso Cab that saw 18 months in 40% new French Oak, giving it a lot of suppleness and elegance right out of the shoot.
