Marietta’s calling card and bread and butter is their unrivaled Rhône blends from Sonoma and Mendocino. Ever since Chris Bilbro founded the place nearly 45-years ago, they’ve been focused on making Cote Rotie-like red blends and have had tremendous success.
Nobody in either of those places is making wine any better than these guys. And nobody is touching their level of acclaim either. Robert Parker, Jr. himself once dubbed them, “one of California’s finest value wineries” a testament to the reasonably priced bottles that feature their old-vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah in addition to their Cabernet.
What I find so amazing about Marietta is that every time I revisit their lineup, the wines seem to get better. Take today’s wine as the perfect example: the 2019 Christo Red Blend. Affectionately nicknamed, “Christo” (his great-aunt Marietta’s nickname for him) the wine is actually made by Chris’ son, Scott – who has been in charge since 2012. In the 2019 vintage, he fashioned a gorgeous Northern Rhone blend of Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah with the signature splash of Viognier.

96 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Viognier, the 2019 Christo has a deep ruby-purple color and alluring scents of blueberry jam and cassis with accents of loamy earth, violet, coffee beans and iron. The full-bodied palate is powerful yet silky, with seamless acidity and gobs of pure violet perfume on the long, layered finish. It’s easy to drink now but offers a decade or more of cellaring potential.
93 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of black cherries, blackberries and oolong. Full-bodied with lovely fine, slightly tight tannins. Focused and driven with sturdy depth and length. Meaty with graphite undertones. 65% syrah, 22% grenache, 10% petite sirah and 3% viognier.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
