To say Tony Biagi is a Robert Parker Darling is an understatement. During his tenure at Plumpjack, CADE, et al) Parker rained down a tirade of 98 and 99 point scores on Tony’s wines – easily justifying the $300 to $800 price tags.
His 2012 departure for Hourglass was felt throughout the valley with many unsure about the future. Those doubts have been squashed now, as critics have continued to rave, with last year’s Cab returning Tony to the rarefied air of 98 points yet again.
Now that Vinous Media named Tony Biagi their winemaker of year in 2020 – the cat is completely out of the bag and one of the drop dead best values in all of Napa has steadily risen in price, now a well-deserved $50 a bottle. Still a steal for one of the drop dead best values in all of Napa.
Inviting aromas of cocoa, creme de cassis and dark fruits with a hint of oak. It’s a full-bodied grippy Cab blend with rich dark chocolate notes that blend nicely with black cherries and figs. The tannins are ripe and solid, and the wine has a beautiful drive from start to finish. This is perfect for grilling season or more serious cuisine– both in play at this amazing price.
And while there are only 10 cases to spread around, there was one pleasant surprise. During our trip down memory lane – Tony & Team decided to roll back the clock and give us the original release price.

Readers looking for an introduction to the wines from this great estate should check out the 2018 HG III, which is always a more Merlot-dominated blend. The 2018 reveals a deep purple/ruby hue to go with a juicy, endearing, up-front style that carries lots of blackcurrant and black cherry fruits, hints of chocolate, spice, and dried herbs, medium to full body, and a plush, sexy, yet beautifully balanced profile. It’s going to evolve for 15 years and is a rock-solid bottle of wine.

Very attractive blackberry and blueberry character with cedar and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied with tight, chewy tannins and enticing, transparent fruit underneath. Flavorful finish. Drink after 2022.

The 2018 HG III is a delicious entry-level wine from Hourglass. Juicy dark cherry, spice, leather and cedar all run through this racy, open-knit Merlot-based blend. It’s easy to look past the HG III here given the level of the other wines, but that’s a mistake, as the 2018 is fabulous and a great value too.

There’s no better vintage to lock into a Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon than 2021. The winery, like the majority of their neighbors in the Napa Valley had a banner year for all varietals but Cab in particular. Cakebread’s 2021 t is every bit as good as I remember this wine being. It’s dark garnet to the rim, with a plethora of inviting aromas of black and blueberries, creme de cassis and Black Forest cake with some dried fruit and herbal notes. It’s a full-bodied beauty that should have 15-25 years of aging, but is already flashing so much in its youth.

“After sampling 86 wines over a two-day marathon with Realm Cellars co-owners Scott Becker and winemaker Benoit Touquette, I had no doubt that one would make my top 10 list of the year. It would be ‘The Bard’, which will be available beginning in 2024. It is a very giving wine that promises great rewards for long-term cellaring and is enjoyable three full nights in a row, never losing its zeal if having one great glass each night is your prerogative. Power and muscle frame the core of this towering red, with its red-toned fruits and rich, toasty oak spice nuance by bay Laurel and pastis. Full-bodied with tremendous decadence of chocolaty tannins that are pliant and billowy, lifted by supple blackberry and black raspberry fruit, a drizzle of cherry coulis, and resolving with refined tobacco, cedar wood spice, and laced with coriander and cumin aromatics. It has a satisfyingly rich finish. Number five of my top wines of 2023.” -Decanter

“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Gala Vineyard is fabulous. It emerges from a terraced vineyard at 1,800 feet in elevation in Napa Valley, just above the Coombsville AVA. Rich, dark and beautifully structured, the 2021 possesses notable pedigree and character. Black cherry, plum, gravel, licorice, bay leaf and espresso all race across the palate. Readers who enjoy old-school Napa Cabernets will adore this. This wine, if sold in Napa Valley, would cost four to five times as much.” -Antonio Galloni

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
