One of the very best American wine partnerships is one that has been in place since the 1990s. I’m talking Dan Goldfield and Steve Dutton. Together, Dutton Goldfield has made Sonoma Coast and Russian River bottlings that absolutely rival the very best: Kistler, Hirsch and Ramey, but they do so for about half the price.
Steve farms over eighty(!) unique vineyard sites across the Russian River Valley, primarily in the Green Valley appellation at Dutton Ranch, the home vineyard. Dan Goldfield is the small-production Pinot Noir obsessed winemaker who cut his teeth at Mondavi and Schramsberg before starting this partnership.
For the last 25+ years, their calling card wines have been the estate bottlings from Dutton Ranch. People go nuts for these wines – most of the bottles never make it out of the winery as evident by the fact that I’ve never been able to offer this Pinot up and only once or twice got the Chard. Both the wines are perennial powerhouses with big scores attached, and in the fantastic and cool 2019 vintage, that excellence was on full display.

Fine-edged, with hints of tangerine to the cherry tart and plum paste flavors that are juicy and supported by rich acidity. The lively finish offers notes of cedar and spice, with hints of coffeeberry.

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
