The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is widely heralded as the best in Bordeaux since the epic 2010 vintage. Journalists have unleashed a bevy of 100-point ratings on the Bordeaux class of 2016. Parker’s Wine Advocate has given nine of them in total, and gave the vintage an enormous 97 point score as a whole.
Rarely do all the critics so unanimously agree as they do in 2016 a vintage that is simply fantastic from “top to bottom,” making not only for 100-pointers that will age gracefully for 4 decades, but for a handful of magnificent “sleepers” from the Right Bank’s rising stars.
None more so that Stephane Donze at Chateau Martinat.
The 2016 Chateau Martinat that Stephane crafted is nothing short of a classic — aromatically complex, generously infused with ripe cassis and small black fruit compote, all the natural concentration bolstered by just a touch of earth. Drink now until sometime after 2030!

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This blend of mainly Merlot with some Malbec has weight along with a fresher element that gives it a lift. Black plum fruits are laced with acidity while also powered by firm, young tannins.

90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 95 Points, Lisa Perotti-Brown
The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
