Today’s Pinot Grigio hails from a scorching hot region. But I’m pretty sure I’ve never even offered a wine from this part of Italy before so I’m pretty psyched. This one today, the Borghi Ad Est comes from Gorizia in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in Collio.
Here, along the Slovenian border, you’re treated to an incredible eco-system perfect for generating world-class wines. You’re protected from the harsh winters by the Julian Alps, protected from the heat in the summer from the breeze from the nearby Adriatic Sea and are home to some of the most amazing soil in the world (layers of marl and sandstone). That unique combination is responsible for some of the best high-toned, mineral laced whites anywhere.
It’s here and Alto Adige that make the best Pinot Grigio in the world, hands down. No where else are people touching this kind of quality. Wine Enthusiast went as far as calling the two “the finest growing zones for white wine in Italy.” Hard to argue.
The best part of Borghi Ad Est is that the winery only makes Pinot Grigio much like most wineries in the area. Stick to what you know best, right? Seeing only stainless steel, the wine comes out super expressive and energetic with tropical aromas of mango, guava and papaya. On the mouth, passion fruit, lemon, guava and a wonderful mineral component with strong acidity that yields to a creamy middle with a dash of honey. The finish is long and dry with lingering citrus notes. Mamma mia.

Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
