By now you’re all well aware of our new superstar winemaking connect, Bibi Graetz who first burst onto the scene in 2000. But it wasn’t until last year that we managed to secure some of his delicious, high-scoring Tuscans blends.
An artist by birth, he soon realized that the land he owned was on prime real estate– around his house grew some of the most mature Sangiovese vineyards (he calls them gardens) in the country – a few parcels a staggering 85 years old now. With contracts about to expire, Bibi had to decide whether to renew or take them over. Luckily, he chose the latter. Then he made an even better decision when he brought in (now rockstar) winemaker – Antinori Antonini.
The two set out to create the very best expression of the vineyards they possibly could. The bottling would be called Testamatta and would be 100% garden Sangiovese – which was not allowed by the powers that be. But Bibi doesn’t care about the rules, so he continues doing what he does best.
His 2019 Cassamatta Rosato is another 100% Sangiovese ala many of the reds. It’s a refreshing, delicate Rosato that boats vibrant notes of cherries and wild strawberries with a honeysuckle finish. This is a well-balanced and wonderfully enjoyable price. Since these are the last of Bibi’s cases from the 2019 vintage, we were given an exceptional price as a thank you. Offered by the case only — 20 cases of these left in the world.

“The nose brings both fruit and warmth, as aromas of strawberries, cherries and hibiscus flirt with notes of dark chocolate, orange peel and stones basking in the sun. On the palate, a wave of cranberries brings astringency that freshens a persistent streak of stoniness, before the chocolate returns for the finish. The firm, imposing tannins creep up slowly, maintaining depth without weight.” -Wine Enthusiast

“Rich yet succulent and open-knit, this red delivers strawberry, cherry, earth, tobacco and licorice flavors allied to a fine structure. Shows excellent balance and length.” -Wine Spectator
The Tonelli family are royalty in this region, with four generations of grape growers leading the way and even establishing the local D.O.C. The family’s 2022 Ponente is 100% Sangiovese and is an absolutely incredible wine for the price. Comfortably less than $20/bottle for fleshed out, high-toned, zipped up Sangiovese? Count me in. It screams for pizza or summer salads, squash or a charcuterie plate. It’s about to be one of your new favorites if it’s not already from last vintage.
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from Aleramici hits all the right notes. It has a nice medium weight to it with easy drinking cherry, creme de cassis and purple fruits. It’s multi-dimensional with waves of some dark plum and blackberry with more sage and spice components as well that compliment it perfectly.
