In the Central Coast of California, there is one winery marching to the beat of their own drummer. Breaking the number one rule of keep winery visitors near the cash register and instead opting to open up their immaculate Santa Margherita Ranch to visitors for ziplining through the vineyards, wildlife tours, family picnics, lavish dinners, you name it.
But Ancient Peaks isn’t worried about the potential distractions, especially not with their secret weapon at the helm. A young, rising star winemaker who has put all of the Central Coast if not California on notice.
Armed with one of the brightest rising stars in winemaking, Ancient Peaks has been setting the pace for what has become the budding wine region in Paso Robles. Winemaker Amanda Wittsrom-Higgins was last year’s cover for Wine Enthusiast’s annual list of “40 Under 40 of America’s Top Tastemakers” and was included as one of “the trailblazers who are redefining the industry as we know it.”
The quiet revolution she’s been leading is beginning to draw attention. The Wine Advocate recently called Amanda’s wines, “keenly priced, high-quality wines that deserve to be better known.” That might be true but it too many catch on, there’s no way we’ll continue to be able to grab these massively intense wines for these prices.

Dark in the glass, this blend of 37% Syrah, 24% Malbec, 16% Petit Verdot, 13% Zinfandel and 10% Petite Sirah is intense in aromas of black fruit, loamy soil and wet herbs. It lands on the palate with a hearty mouthfeel, delivering flavors of black currant, roasted meat, black pepper and toasty oak.

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
