If you’ve been in the Bourbon Buyers Club for a while, you know that it’s really once in a blue moon that I offer up a Tennessee Whiskey. In the past if I’ve done one, it’s been from our friends at George Dickel, but today’s is every bit as worthy as offering up.
This one comes from Old Hickory – who have been players in the Whiskey market since the 1860s when they were originally making Bourbon in Fayette County. They would move to Tennessee at the tail end of the century, and have remained a fixture in the southern Whiskey for generations.
Tennessee Whiskey and Kentucky whiskey aren’t all that different. They’re both made with at least 51% corn and aged two years in new American charred oak barrels. The major difference is that almost all Tennessee Whiskey goes through the “Lincoln County Process” where the whisky is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging in the barrel. This adds a smoky tone but also makes the whiskey lighter on the palate & much more mellow.

This is the first release of its kind and was just announced last week. I snagged six bottles as soon as I could. It’s a U.S. only release, and it remains to be seen if there will be others. The Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is triple distilled in copper pot stills and matured in American Bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso Sherry butts. Then it’s finished for a minimum of 4 months in hand selected, air-dried American Oak from the Taylor family farm in Kentucky.
“Easily one of the most tactile yet assertive and expressive bourbons I’ve tasted in the last two years; fasten your seat belts.” -Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal
This is a beauty with a complex nose of toffee with hints of orange peel, herbs, honey, leather and oak. The mouthfeel is bold, dry and delicate with notes of candied almonds and very rich cocoa. It’s a gem at a great price.
Today I snagged a really special single barrel that I have been working on for nearly two years now with Old Forester. It’s a 128.2 proof dynamo that will blow you away, and you’ll love every single sip. The nose is of fresh leather, baking spices & cocoa. On the pallet, this one is a monster & hits you with baked apple. brown sugar, vanilla & cinnamon. The finish goes on for two days long with notes of fig, cherries & clove. It’s big, but she’s a beauty.
94 Points (#12 Whiskey of the Year), Whisky Advocate
“At the helm for Blue Run Spirits’ whiskeys are whiskey director Shaylyn Gammon and liquid advisor Jim Rutledge, who demonstrate their mastery with this blend of three Kentucky bourbons aged 6, 8, and 9 years. Oatmeal raisin cookies and tropical aromas dominate the nose, though dried pineapple is soon overtaken by cinnamon spice, vanilla bean, and grape jelly. The palate is rich with flavors of chocolate and espresso, then playful notes of raspberry syrup. Flourless chocolate cake, more fruit, and a good deal of heat make for a tantalizing finish.”
