The Torres name carries great weight throughout the wine world – but especially in Spanish speaking countries. The family that has been named Drink International’s ‘Most admired European brand’ for over a decade and they’ve been able to do that by finding value and possibilities in areas that others haven’t even looked.
In the early 1980’s, Miguel Torres opened one of the first Chilean wineries with an eye set on the export market. He was met with some doubt, but not for long as he quickly found out his wines had a chameleon effect when he was selling them. Time after time, he fooled importers and distributors who were positive they were tasting wines from France, when really they were drinking Torres’ Chilean Chardonnay or one of his famous Carmenere blends that amazingly can mirror Bordeaux.
In 30 years of Chilean winemaking, the Torres family has once again outpaced those around them and built a reputation for excellence and innovation. Heck, they’ve even become the first winery in Chile to produce an orange wine, something they’ve tinkered with for years.
But for me, the calling card is and has always been the ‘Cordillera de los Andes’ Chardonnay. Blind test taste any of your snobby wine friends and there won’t be a single one of them that doesn’t think they’re tasting Chablis or a satellite French appellation.

94 Points, Vinous
“The 2020 Chardonnay Cordillera de los Andes from the Talinay vineyard in Limari was 50% aged in French barrels. Pale yellow in color. The nose offers notes of pineapple and apple, hints of acacia, oak, hazelnuts, and whiffs of praline and iodine. In the mouth, this presents good fat and a smooth, slightly creamy flow with heightened freshness and a little salinty. A long-lasting wine.”
92 Points, James Suckling
“A bright nose, showing green apple, green pineapple, star fruit, fine lees and limey, chalky notes. A taut yet smoothly rendered chardonnay with a medium body and fresh, natural acidity. Well made.”

It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
