Bob Foley is a winemaker who has always had a plan going way back to 1977 when he first started making wines at Pride Mountain. From Pride, he went on to build Parker darlings like Switchback Ridge, Hourglass and Paloma. Not possible without the best of plans. So, with that kind of resume, doors open pretty easily when it comes to finding some of the best Cabernet grapes possible in the Napa Valley.
If you know Bob, he’s a character. There’s virtually no one in all of Napa that is willing to sit on wine for years, only to release it when the master deems it ready. It makes no sense. You have to pay the vineyard crew by the week. Barrels – paid for upon delivery. You get to wait a little bit before you buy the glass. But Bob will wait several years before finally releasing the wine and getting back any return on investment.
So the waiting game got the best of us last year and Bob never released the ‘Butcher’. In the two vintages we’ve had so far, the Butcher has been the highest rated and most ordered by far. But as we got our last shot at the 2013 bottling at the end of 2018, we had to wait more than a full calendar year before getting another shot at the “butcher’s cut”. After tasting the 2014 Foley ‘The Butcher’ Cabernet last week, I can gladly report, it’s well worth the wait.
After a near perfect 2013 vintage in Napa, winemakers were treated to what many say was an even better 2014. Wine Spectator called it “A Dream Vintage”. James Suckling called it, “one of the best vintages of the past two decades!” For Robert Foley, nature provided more than enough to make this vintage the meatiest ‘Butcher’ Cabernet ever. With gorgeous dark, ripe and concentrated fruit with intense aromatics and a ton of depth, the 2014 Butcher Cabernet is the culmination of sheer power with silky finesse.

This one is an absolute beauty from the man behind the great Dominus and Inglenook projects, Christian Moueix. The wine is fantastic – far better than the Inglenook bottlings, some would even say equal to its big brother, Dominus. Still, at nearly half the price and with virtually the same huge scores, it’s one that you need to try for yourself – it deserves a place in the cellar without a doubt. It’s elegant and incredibly well-polished, sculpted with tremendous precision and focus throughout. The 97 points attached to it seems appropriate, especially in such a fantastic and ageworthy vintage. This one should enjoyed over the next 15-25 years.

“Needing plenty of air to show at its best, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a sensational, gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers the goods like only this region can. Pure Cabernet magic on the nose, with deep blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and a kiss of spring flowers as well as a beautiful Pessac-Leognan-like scorched earth character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s one of those wines that builds incrementally on the palate and it’s only after the second or third sip that you realize how special this wine is. It also offers that rare mix of power and elegance that’s the hallmark of all great wines. It needs a couple of hours in the decanter if drinking any time soon. Hats off to Paul Hobbs for an incredible Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.“

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
