Perfectly situated in the northwest corner of St. Émilion, near the border shared with Pomerol is the gorgeous Chateau Chauvin. The Grand cru classe estate spanning 37 acres is sandwiched between neighbors Chateau Cheval Blanc and La Dominique with the entire vineyard planted on a single block.
The Chateau is owned by one of the most famous and powerful women in Bordeaux, Sylvie Cazes, who became the first woman to hold the position as president of the Union de Grand Crus de Bordeaux in 2012. On top of that and owning and managing Chateau Chauvin with her brother, Jean Michel (founder/owner Lynch Bages), she also owns the 3-star Michelin restaurant, Le Chapon Fin.
This wine is the flagship wine, the first from Chateau Chauvin and the big brother to the 2015 Folie de Chauvin that we saw a few weeks ago. The 2016 Chauvin has offers up dark fruited and sage medley aromas with excellent precision and structure and a finish that lasts longs and reminds you of the gripps tannins. This one is showing really nicely now, but also has the ability to last 15 years easily.

Easily one of the most impressive of the lineup, just bursting with fruit and power – tight firm tannins giving clear support and backbone. This is a fairly Left Bank feel for a St Emilion, perhaps from its dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, and it successfully delivers a recognisable Chauvin signature. A beautiful vibrant violet rim suggests this is going to age well.

Blackberry, blueberry and floral aromas follow through to a full body, tight and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink in 2023. A château to watch in the future.

“The 2018 Ronan by Client is medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it has fragrant notes of black and red cherries and blackberry preserves with cinnamon toast and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied, it is lively and fresh with a grainy texture and savory finish. This is a good value wine.” -Lisa Perotti-Brown

“Poured from the special anniversary bottle, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a truly outstanding wine that leaves a lasting memory for those who are lucky enough to enjoy it. What stands out is the absolutely seamless-seamless-seamless (yes, it’s worth repeating three times) integration of its many moving parts. The wine magically transitions from cherry, spice, chocolate and espresso in one melodic and continuous loop. It exudes balance and elegance over long, delicious minutes. It is profoundly impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. Of all the grapevines planted on the Ornellaia estate, the 2010 vintage showed best results with Merlot, says Leonardo Raspini. Because the harvest was later than usual, the early-ripening grape enjoyed a slow and steady evolution.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“So aromatic and fresh with black olives, black truffles, gravel and dried flowers. Milk chocolate. Ovaltine. Full-bodied with fantastic old-vine tannins. Layered and very structured. Goes deep and down. One for the cellar. Superb. Maybe the best ever.” -James Suckling

“The flagship 2018 Château Lagrange is a more dense, backward, serious wine, offering an unevolved yet incredibly promising bouquet of cassis, blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and violets. A big, rich, full-bodied Saint-Julien, it delivers thrilling purity of fruit, plenty of background oak, ripe, silky tannins, and a great mid-palate. This is serious stuff, but it’s going to require patience. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades.” -Jeb Dunnuck
