It’s fitting that one of Sicily’s leading producers and one of the ones most responsible for their current place on the international stage has now made an age-worthy Red wine that can compete with any cellar worthy Red from anywhere in the world. James Suckling said it belonged in the “highest league of Italian and global wines” and that’s not hyperbole. This wine really is that good.
Benanti’s Serra Della Contessa Particella No. 587 Alberello Centenario (officially) is made from vines as old as the name is long. Over 100 year old pre-phylloxera vines are responsible for carving out this Italian Red Wine masterpiece that I think has the bones and structure to last 40-50 years. You can tell there’s so much nuance and depth that’s just tucked away in this one– like a sleeping monster just begging to be awakened.
As you can probably imagine, a bottling such as this is extremely rare– perhaps the greatest Sicilian bottling to date and in the magical 2015 — a wine that is equally as memorable as the best Brunellos and Barolos from the vintage. Only 15 six-packs even made their way to the East Coast, and I can say that five of those six-packs are earmarked for Nicholas Wines. That means just 30 bottles to go round. Don’t miss this gorgeous Italian collector.

“A new dimension in Etna red that belongs in the highest league of Italian and global wines. Enveloping floral, candied-orange and red-berry nose, but that’s only the beginning of it. Extremely concentrated and seamless palate that’s totally focused through the finish, which stretches out effortlessly towards infinity. The grapes come from over 100-year-old, pre-phylloxera nerello mascalese (85%) and nerello cappuccio (15%) vines. It spent 24
months in French oak, but that’s completely invisible. Limited quantity.”

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
