Over the next 35 years, Joe Heitz worked tirelessly to understand every nook and cranny of his prized Trailside vineyard in Napa Valley’s beloved Rutherford AVA. For example, the soils near the northern end of the vineyard – closest to Quintessa – are primarily Cortina (or very deep, excessively drained soils often in a former flood plain). Vines plunge incredibly deep into the soil here.
Nearly 25 years before this was commonplace, Joe crafted a plan for how to handle each individual parcel, and then how to ferment each separately and then masterly blend to achieve the ‘Trailside Cabernet’ style.
It’s a historic wine and a formula you don’t F$%^ with … unless you really, REALLY want to. Current head winemaker, Brittany Sherwood’s primary job is preserving the legacy of Heitz Cellars but it’s pretty irresistible to take just a few barrels of Trailside Vineyard Cabernet and make it the more modern way.

“Needing plenty of air to show at its best, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a sensational, gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers the goods like only this region can. Pure Cabernet magic on the nose, with deep blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and a kiss of spring flowers as well as a beautiful Pessac-Leognan-like scorched earth character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s one of those wines that builds incrementally on the palate and it’s only after the second or third sip that you realize how special this wine is. It also offers that rare mix of power and elegance that’s the hallmark of all great wines. It needs a couple of hours in the decanter if drinking any time soon. Hats off to Paul Hobbs for an incredible Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.“

This one is an absolute beauty from the man behind the great Dominus and Inglenook projects, Christian Moueix. The wine is fantastic – far better than the Inglenook bottlings, some would even say equal to its big brother, Dominus. Still, at nearly half the price and with virtually the same huge scores, it’s one that you need to try for yourself – it deserves a place in the cellar without a doubt. It’s elegant and incredibly well-polished, sculpted with tremendous precision and focus throughout. The 97 points attached to it seems appropriate, especially in such a fantastic and ageworthy vintage. This one should enjoyed over the next 15-25 years.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

The 2021 Auctioneer is a Napa Cabernet that sizzles at this price point, incredibly well built and food friendly, with impeccable balance and not overly alcoholic or ripe. It’s a wine that wins you over with finesse over strength but one that I’m certain will win you over nonetheless. A priceless ode to a late father and a Napa legend is available today at a price that’s hard to ignore.
