Imagine reading a review from Robert Parker that said ” #1 wine from America”. I think that would certainly catch your attention. Well, that’s just what Fred Minnick (The Robert Partker of the Whiskey/Bourbon world) said about Journeyman Distillery. “#1 Wheated Whiskey in America”. Shouldn’t that be #1 Wheated Whiskey in the World? Or are they holding out from us in Europe or Africa somewhere? Anyway, I digress.
He tasted over 600 blind during the pandemic. Sounds like his lockdown might have been better than most of ours! Journeyman makes 2 versions of Whiskey, one is the Featherbone & the other is the Corset, Whips & Whiskey which is the much more limited release. You know, if I’m going to do a private barrel with my name on it that I was picking from the Corset batch. Oh & I made sure it was bottled at full proof!

Our third single barrel of Whistle Pig and the first time we have our hands on their 6-year PiggyBack bottling. This one leads with a nose of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, butterscotch and toffee. On the palate, I get a lot of citrus & peach with a touch of lavender & black cherry. The finish here is strong & long with spicy dried fruits and caramel notes that linger. This one was distilled in house in Vermont, and as anyone can tell you with the farm releases, they always deliver the best of punches. This one comes in at 109.8 Proof.
Bulleit isn’t usually one to come out with too many new or limited releases, but the ‘Frontier’ Limited Release bucks that trend. This American Single Malt was made with 100% malted barley, aged in new American spiced oak casks, and bottled at 43% alcohol. It hits with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, candied orange, dried fruits, and maple syrup. She’s a beauty – just wish I had more to sell!
The juice here is so pure and elegant, it tastes much more like a $80/bottle of Tequila than one going for half the price, but that’s why I love these single barrel deals so much. The value is insane. This Reposado spent just under 12 months in used bourbon barrels. Golden brown with fresh agave, oak & vanilla. Remarkably smooth finish. This is one of those oddball tequila’s that is good enough to just sip on the rocks but cheap enough to use to make one hell of a margarita.
Today I snagged a really special single barrel that I have been working on for nearly two years now with Old Forester. It’s a 128.2 proof dynamo that will blow you away, and you’ll love every single sip. The nose is of fresh leather, baking spices & cocoa. On the pallet, this one is a monster & hits you with baked apple. brown sugar, vanilla & cinnamon. The finish goes on for two days long with notes of fig, cherries & clove. It’s big, but she’s a beauty.
