Santenay at the southernmost tip of the Cote de Beaune is like no other region in Burgundy. First of all, the orientation is much more East/West before the turn at Chassagne-Montrachet opens up to the rest of the Cote de Beaune.
Second, the terroir is much more diverse than the rest of Burgundy with a few very, very special plots featuring soils similar to Graves in Bordeaux and a precious few more akin to the top Grand Cru of Cotes du Nuits like today’s wine.
Santenay is an area where a little home-field advantage goes a long way which is exactly what we have with Vincent Girardin. This is where he grew up – the fields where his boyhood imagination ran wild.
So perhaps his parents shouldn’t have been so shocked when in 1980 at the age of 19 he made the decision to stop selling to the big boys and take the two hectares of family vines in Santenay and began making wine under the family name. A decade of experiments and then the addition of winemaker Eric Germain – the maison really hits its stride.
Vincent used his neighborhood connections to source grapes from some of the best small growers in the region for this wine. That’s why he calls it Terre d’Enfance or childhood lands. That’s also why the price is so reasonable. Sourced from vineyards aged 45+ years, this is no baby Santenay, it’s just got a tiny price tag for what’s in the bottle. In fact, despite the high-flying prices on many of his cru wines, this is considered Vincent’s flagship wine and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
92 Points, James Suckling
Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
