When looking for the best easy sippin’ wines, it’s hard to look past France’s Loire Valley. Home to Sancerre, Pouilly Fume, Touraine, Menetou-Salon and Quincy, the Loire is incredibly rich with great Sauvignon Blanc regions. Luckily for us, today’s wine features a little bit of everything.
Similar to the Wagner Family and Caymus in California, Villebois’ Dutch/French owner has vineyards in all of Loire’s desirable Sauvignon Blanc areas, with unprecedented access and resources available to make world class Sauvignon. Today’s wine is a rarity that includes grapes from right in the middle of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, with the slight additions of Menetou-Salon and Touraine.
The resulting wine is like a Baby Sancerre for less than half the price– but a fruity, more vibrant version of Sauvignon– one that is incredibly, light, fresh and delicious and perfect for some appetizers, pool-side sipping or better yet a combination of the two.
The best part is the price. Villebois has a full portfolio of single vineyard wines from Sancerre, as well as bottling Pouilly Fume, Menetou-Salon and Touraine AVA wines. But this is the only wine in the portfolio that has a little slice of everything. As such it’s labeled as a Vin de France — an overarching region known for producing great bargains, though none as good as this one today.

Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
