I’m not expecting the world when I’m looking at New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. I just want a few basic things:
The wine has to be crisp with fresh acids and no sugar, easy to drink on its own and easy to pair with summer cuisine; goat cheese salads, grilled watermelon, etc… Second, it has to have fruit. So many of these wines are all grass clippings and lacking in what makes Sauvignon Blancs so delightful. Finally, it has to have a stellar price.
Add those three requirements together and you as history can tell you, very few New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs make the cut.
Today’s wine hit all three right out of the park. This one is as red hot as the Yanks.

Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.

If you’ve never heard of Bisci, let’s start here. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called Giuseppe Bisci’s Verdicchio “one of the finest I’ve ever tasted,” and noted that “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” A staple at $85/bottle for both French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” – The Wine Advocate
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
This one is so fruit friendly and inviting and also the perfect treat for some Italian food or fresh fish. It leads with beautiful notes of stone fruit, lemon, lime, and some acacia flowers. It’s delicate, but still full on the mouth, with good structure, freshness, and intensity.
