Tuesday night Cabernet Sauvignon at good prices is at times the toughest code to crack. That is until this incredible sample of Trousse Chemise Cabernet Sauvignon crossed my desk last month. I had forgotten I had this very same conversation a couple of years ago with the brilliant, young winemaker behind that label, Anne Sery. Luckily for us, she remembered quite well.
Anne has consistently wowed us with her Pinot Noir and Chardonnays over the past few years. Heck, we’re not alone. Head to some of New York City’s hottest restaurants with the best wine lists and you will find Anne’s wine by the glass at prices we offer by the bottle. So as she continues to expand her red hot brand, it didn’t strike us as odd when she told us she was turning to Bordeaux varietals for her next project. After all, she did earn her masters and enology degree from the University of Bordeaux– and has been turning out beautiful examples of Cabernet and Merlot for Laurent Montalieu’s Solena Estate label since joining his team in 2009.
After a widely successful first jaunt into the category, Anne decided to add Washington Cabernet to her permanent arsenal of wines. It’s no surprise, in all of 2019, it was our 2nd most ordered wine, a consistently 2nd or 3rd or 4th time order for folks who couldn’t get enough of this value cab. In 2018, I’m happy to say, you’re going to be equally if not more pleased with the final project.
The 2018 is loaded with flavors of cassis and black berries with just a touch of coffee and dark chocolate. It’s the perfect party Cab, delicious by itself or a great complement to just about anything off the grill. But here’s the craziest part: Washington Cabernet continues to produce some of the best value in the world. The price is crazy; we’ve been grandfathered in to Anne’s Trousse- Chemise best offer price, so we can pass our savings onto you. It’s fairly conceivable to blind taste this wine in a group of $50+ Napa Cabs and have this one come out on top.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
