A few weeks ago, I sat down to one of my hectic tasting sessions. Roughly 18 bottles of wine with the labels all covered up, corks already popped and to the side, bottles chilled and ready to go. The first few.. Meh. Nothing special. But I stopped at my fifth glass and did a double take.
What I was tasting was single vineyard Sancerre. Like the good stuff. At least that’s what I swore. I was trying to figure out what commune it might’ve come from. I’m not saying I’m an expert, but I’ve been to the Loire enough times to be able to get pretty close with a guess.
But this was one of those times, I wasn’t even on the same continent. I was bamboozled. Granted, I had asked for Sancerre so maybe I was looking for it, but this Russian River Valley Sauv Blanc that I had never before heard of, stole the show. I don’t even think we had any other winners in the group. I was that enamored.
If that special Sancerre mineral cut is why you keep coming back for more, then this is the Sauvignon Blanc for you. It’s weighty and well-balanced and offers so much nuance between the minerality, the spiciness and all the pristine fruit. Stone fruits, a hint of ginger, turmeric and citrus. A touch of salinity, a burst of minerality and the backbone to pair with anything on the table.

94 Points (Top Aromatic White), Tasting Panel
A thrilling combination of scents floored us: basil, turmeric, and lime blossom. Seductive notes of peaches, fresh-cut Granny Smith apples, and oregano meld with frisky acidity. A steely, salty minerality comes in, dynamic and a heavenly match with food

Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling
The winery could never expected their Tuscan Vermentino would become as integral as it has – even 25 years later, it’s still a key piece of the puzzle for Campo Maccione. It’s an unassuming wine with great viscosity and bright, savory flavors that way overdelivers for the price. James Suckling agreed, as did Wine Enthusiast. Suckling gave it a 90 and deemed it “an interesting take on Tuscan Vermentino.” Wine Enthusiast took it up a few notches, attaching a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate to the wine along with a 92-point review for the wine “with a sophisticated restraint.”

If you’ve never heard of Bisci, let’s start here. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called Giuseppe Bisci’s Verdicchio “one of the finest I’ve ever tasted,” and noted that “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” A staple at $85/bottle for both French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” – The Wine Advocate
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
