I’ve said it a million times, finding great California Cabernet for under $30 a bottle is akin to foraging for chanterelles. But finding an under- $20/btl on cases BEFORE the promo, well that’s like foraging for white truffles. Either way, once you stumble upon a good source, you tell absolutely nobody, and return to the spot as often as you can until it dries up.
I guess you can’t really call it an unknown discovery anymore now that Hope Family Wines sits in the Top 10 of Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines of the Year for 2019. But we have been working on getting our first offer from this winery well before that hit the press.
The 2017 Treana Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hope Family is the definition of a crowd pleaser. I guess that’s why so many buyers have requested I get it in again. It’s got all the big, bold juicy fruit you could possibly want wrapped tight around well-structured tannin – that will also allow this one to continue to age gracefully for a decade.

Aromas of black cherry, caramel sauce, dried herbs and crushed rocks lead into a palate shaped by strong yet relenting tannins. Flavors of oak and more dark cherry ride a silky mouthfeel.

Deep shimmering ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, pipe tobacco and baking spices. Fleshy and appealingly sweet cherry, black currant and floral pastille flavors become more lively as the wine stretches out. Plays richness off finesse and finishes very long and appealingly sweet, with subtle tannins coming in late.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
