I’ve been touting the white wines from the Rias Baixas (pronounced ree-ass by-shuss) region of Spain’s Galacia for years. The reasons are pretty simple.
The wines have developed side by side with the region’s native shellfish for hundreds of years – making it hard to find a better wine to pair with seafood. And secondly, the area’s really been isolated from the rest of Spain tucked right across the river from Portugal. That’s kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be from anywhere else in the world.
The press is starting to catch up so I don’t expect these wines to remain at these price points for much longer. But today’s Albarino takes it a step further – a hero among heroes.
The best part of Rias Baixas Albarino so far – is even as its popularity continues to rise – prices remain like Sancerre in the 90’s — still available in the ballpark of $15-25 dollars. It’s the kind of tremendous value that we see shrinking worldwide– especially as tariffs have hit many white wines.

92 Points (Wines That Taste like $50), James Suckling
A bright and delicious Albarino suggesting fresh herbs and yuzu. Full-bodied with a waxy core of preserved lemons, but the acidity is cutting and pure. So delicious to drink now.

This one is so fruit friendly and inviting and also the perfect treat for some Italian food or fresh fish. It leads with beautiful notes of stone fruit, lemon, lime, and some acacia flowers. It’s delicate, but still full on the mouth, with good structure, freshness, and intensity.
Every year, this wine has proven to be a Nicholas Wines staple. The newly released 2022 Frenzy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a fabulous value white wine, loaded with green apples, pears and white peaches plus a hint of spice. It’s juicy and fresh, the perfect cocktail hour white. It’s what is referred to as the perfect ‘pool wine’. It’s great paired with just about anything or just enjoyed on its own.
Trust me, this is a fantastic Menetou-Salon. It’s one of those quintessential bottlings from the tiny region that perfectly exemplifies the early sweet and stone fruit flavors that you get backed by some racy acidty and an absolutely to die for mineral streak. This one comes from the coveted Kimmeridgian limestone terroir and vines that are all at least 40 years in age. That gives this so much energy, concentration and lift – it’s a treat!
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
