My never-ending quest to find phenomenal under $30 Napa Cabernet has taken a turn. It’s officially become my side-job, no longer just a hobby. As fires have raged through the valley – winemakers have had more important calls to take than mine and many have lost nearly everything – including many of the wines I might ordinarily be seeking.
For years, my first call for quality Cabernet has almost always been to Ry Richards (Sueno Profundo, Chappellet, Fiancetto). If you’ve read our last call email, you know that those are in short supply. But always one to help, Ry was who first made the introduction to Phil Titus.
Phil’s reputation preceded himself as one of Napa’s great Cabernet winemakers responsible for much of the success at Chappellet as well as Titus Vineyards, and Sonoma Loeb amongst others.
In particular, his work atop Pritchard Hill at Chappellet, turning around a winery that once struggled, but has since churned out countless 98-100-pt scores with a fleet of $$$ wines that are gobbled up by the wine list that takes years to get in.
But as I would find out, the project closest to his heart is the one with his brother Eric, making wines off the family’s 50 acre estate in the heart of St. Helena. They were some of the early ones, purchasing the estate in 1968 and immediately replanting the vineyard from obscure jug wine varietals to Bordeaux grapes and a few precious parcels of Zinfandel.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
92 Pts, James Suckling – 90 Pts, Vinous
This offer is really an easy one. Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres (Baron Eric Rothschild from ‘Chateau Lafite Rothschild’ and Nicolas Catena from ‘Catena’) join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec, crafted nearly 4600 feet above sea level and offered for a fantastic price. This beauty that Vinous called, “remarkably intense” is a case-buy all the way every single vintage released. Only 30 btls to sell though… sorry in advance!
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
