Matt Cline’s Three Wine Company 2018 Zinfandel packs a wallop of juicy, spicy Zin fruit. Matt has spent his life dedicated to showcasing one of the oldest grape growing region in the United States, Contra Costa County. It is about an hour’s drive east of the Bay, through the most suburban area imaginable; picture an hour on Route 35…then out of this suburban sprawl lies a bench of ancient sand and some of the oldest vines in America. There are vines of up to 140 years old here, Zin, carignane, alicante bouchet, and probably a bunch of vines that we forgot the name for…anyway, Matt has always been a big champion for these dry-farmed, organically tended parcels and that old vine pedigree and power comes through in everything he makes.

90 Points, Wine Spectator
Zesty and easygoing, with just enough refinement to stay snappy. Offers briary wild berry and cracked pepper flavors, with a lively pop of tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2025.

Terrific with a burger, BBQ ribs, or grilled leg of lamb.
The 50 hectare estate of Maurice Robert is the jewel of this beautiful growing region, located east of Bordeaux. Robert is first and foremost a viticulturist, tending his vines like gardens. The Bordeaux Rouge 2016, a barrel-fermented, vibrant blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with juicy cassis fruit and just the right touch of savory spice. It is a perfect choice for roasted poultry, grilled burgers or steaks or any Alpine cheese.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
93 Points, James Suckling
Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
