For years, Matt Cline has been one of Nicholas Wines favorite winemakers, consistently over-delivering on every project I’ve seen him work on. Many of you know him for his work with Zinfandel, Mourvedre and Carignan. But his Cabernets are easily my favorite in his arsenal. Here’s why.
Unlike the zinfandel and red blend varieties that are made to drink in their youth, Matt’s Cabernet program is much more patient and deliberate. Though he obtains a mere block of fruit from Suscol Creek vineyard for this Cabernet, he has the wine sit in new French Oak barrels for 22 months where they beautiful integrate with the wood and smooth the racy wine into a well structured animal.
Hailing from southern Napa Valley and the same vineyard where nearly a quarter of Phelps 2015 Insignia was drawn from, Matt Cline’s big brawny 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted. Patiently aged for 22 months in French oak, the Three Suscol Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is made from fruit grown on Block 5 of the Suscol Creek Vineyard. It boasts flavors of blackberry, figs and black currants with notes of tobacco and cedar. The wine is dense and rich with a synchronized, silky texture and firm tannins giving it a lush mouthfeel and a lengthy finish.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.

96 Points from Robert Parker himself along with extremely high praise. “The wine hits all cylinders in 2010.” This is one the great Margaux wines of the vintage. Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
