If you haven’t heard of Terras Gauda yet, it’s about time to familiarize yourself – these guys are arguably the hottest winery in all of Spain. Terras Gauda literally translates to land of happiness, and of late – there’s more than enough reasons for that.
The Rías Baixas based winery is largely attributed with being responsible for the advancement and development of the O Rosal appellation as a whole, due to its dedication to quality control and preserving the native grape varieties of Galicia. Their wines are gorgeous.
The 2021 vintage was especially kind to the winery which saw both of their Albarinos reach entirely new heights. Their O Rosal Albarino blend ended up on the Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list this past year, and their San Campio Albarino that I’m featuring today earned 91 points and a Best Buy nod from Wine Enthusiast and was featured on their ‘Best of the Year’ publication.
Side note: The super cool label design is of an ‘abadia’ (a nearby abbey). The artist drew the image on the label in one single stroke.

A fresh and zingy albarino with sliced green apples and lime zest. Elegant on the palate with a fresh streak of acidity cutting it through, before a slightly saline finish.

It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
