As good as the 2018 was, the 2019 is substantially better (!?!) and it’s already got the 93-point Wine Spectator review to prove it.
Part of it is the vintage – winemakers started talking about how great the 2019s were before the grapes were even in. The rule of three, they exclaimed.
The theory goes that when three great vintages line up, often the third is the best. Vines are stressed from the previous two vintages and keep resources in reserve, often creating tiny berries of immense concentration of flavor.
It’s true that the 2019 is more concentrated than its predecessor. Although at this elevation and with all the direct sunlight, vintage variation matters less than it might in less desirable locales. “The Estate of Seven Skies” is named for the view atop the tiny estate and is perched high up on a hill overlooking Bolgheri as well as the original Sassicaia vineyard, the most famous Super Tuscan wine of all.
The 2019 Tenuta Sette Cieli “Yantra” is an absolute stunner crafted by a rising winemaking star in Elena Pozzolini. Wine Spectator’s 93 point review echoes my own tasting note: “A mouthful of black currant, blackberry, violet, cedar and iron lends immediate gratification in this polished red. Vibrant and balanced, with a long, firm finish that echoes dark fruit and mineral.”
You might recall that after selecting this one from my Super Tuscan blind tasting, I was totally convinced I was going to get a big three-figure Sassicaia price tag and was blown away when it could be had for under thirty bucks.

The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
