The wine came from Tenuta Sette Cieli or “The Estate of Seven Skies” named for the view atop the tiny estate, perched up on a hill overlooking Bolgheri from nearly 1300 ft. Also in view from the estate is the original Sassacaia vineyard, the most famous Super Tuscan and the wine responsible for birthing an entire category around non-indigenous Italian varietals.
But Super Tuscan has become synonymous with $50+ price tags and Sassacaia, Tenuta San Guido’s Super Tuscan from the neighboring vineyard sells for more than $200 as soon as it’s released! I assumed that’s the convo we were about to have. When he told me the price though, I laughed. Frankly, I thought he was pulling my leg. But he wasn’t.
The 2018 Tenuta Sette Cieli “Yantra” is an absolute stunner crafted by a rising winemaking star in Elena Pozzolini. Drawn off the high-ground of Bolgheri from Bordeaux varietals just like Sassacaia, it’s also a steal at just $26 per bottle. Buy it now. Buy it by the case. Buy it by the pallet. I’m still afraid my importer friend had his decimal in the wrong place.
Berried up with juicy notes of black cherry, licorice, red fruits, spice, leather and coffee beans. The acidity is well integrated with a freshness and vibrancy that stands out from the first taste. This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
