Though he’s a super humble guy, you can tell Joey is special. Robert Parker, Jr. used to make sure he personally tasted through his wines each year because they were that good. He famously gave his Colson Canyon Syrah a 99-point score, becoming one of the first to achieve that score with an under-$50 wine. But Joey Tensley’s Big Reds are consistently that good. Unrivalled value in Santa Barbara and maybe in America.
I had a chance to secure Joey’s 96-Point Colson Canyon Syrah this year, but haven’t pulled the trigger just yet (if you’re interested, click here – I know a guy). Not when I tasted this stunner of a wine that came with a perplexing price tag. That’s not just me talking– Jeb Dunnuck in his 91-point review called it a “smoking good wine and value.”
The 2019 Fundamental Red from Joey is simply a treat. It’s beyond belief what goes into this crazy good Fundamental Red Blend including the famous aforementioned Colson Canyon Syrah. But it doesn’t stop there– bright and juicy Santa Barbara Grenache, some Mourvedre for a hint of spice and earthiness and even in an ode to the great Cote Roties in the Rhone and Sine Qua Non in the States, a splash of Viognier to bring out all the freshness and aromatics.
You’d think given the prowess, laundry list of awards and handful of quotes like Jeb Dunnuck’s “dollar for dollar [Tensley] makes some of the greatest wines out there” that Tensley’s wines would start to price people out… but here we are today with this Tuesday Night stunner.

91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The 2019 Red Wine checks in as 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, and the balance Viognier, all of which was 85% de-stemmed, and it spent 10 months in neutral oak. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits as well as peppery and spice dominate the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with plenty of fruit, surprising complexity, and good overall freshness. It’s a smoking good red as well as a value.”

92 Pts, James Suckling – 90 Pts, Vinous
This offer is really an easy one. Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres (Baron Eric Rothschild from ‘Chateau Lafite Rothschild’ and Nicolas Catena from ‘Catena’) join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec, crafted nearly 4600 feet above sea level and offered for a fantastic price. This beauty that Vinous called, “remarkably intense” is a case-buy all the way every single vintage released. Only 30 btls to sell though… sorry in advance!
100 Pts, International Wine Report
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
