The mid Summer menu at the restaurant sees an incredible amount of Soft Shell Crab and Lobster dishes flying out of the kitchen. It also puts a strain on the Cali Chard section of the wine list as the pairing with softies and lobster is just about perfect.
Historically, my stock of Talbott Sleepy Hollow Chard, a mainstay since Day 1, takes a particularly good pounding as few wines deliver those rich, hedonistic California Chardonnay flavors quite like Talbott.
Over the years, fans of that buttery, classic American style of Chardonnay have just gone crazy for Talbot’s Sleepy Hollow cuvée. The wine is always good, but the 2016 is completely knocked out with two 93 points scores in tow from James Suckling and Vinous

93 Points, Vinous
“Limpid yellow. A highly perfumed nose evokes fresh honeydew melon Meyer lemon pear nectar and white flowers and a smoky mineral nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy concentrated and incisive on the palate offering intense citrus and orchard fruit flavors and chamomile and saffron flourishes. A dusty mineral element adds vibrant lift and cut to the impressively long sharply delineated finish which leaves behind a suave floral note.”
93 Points, James Suckling
Spice, coconut, dried-apple and pear aromas follow through to a full body with density and intensity. Full and oily with a long and flavorful finish. Layered.

The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
93 Points, Decanter
Of course, the Trefethens’ Chardonnay history is well documented. It dates back to the Judgement of Paris and the 1979 Wine World Olympics hosted by the French publication Gault & Millau, where their Chardonnay finished first overall. That pursuit of excellence is still just as strong as ever, as evidenced by the family’s most recent Chardonnay bottling. It’s a 93-point beauty that absolutely dazzles, especially at its incredibly modest price tag.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
