For nearly 25 years, Beth and Jim Summers rolled out truly phenomenal Napa Valley Cabernet that largely flew under the radar. And while I’ve always loved the wines (what is that Charbono really?) and visiting their estate vineyard at the corner of Tubbs Lane – the wine I’ve most wanted to offer, never seemed to have enough to go around – their Reserve – drawn primarily from their valley floor Villa Andriana Vineyard.
Even in bountiful years, there are only 800 cases produced, so I never thought anything of it when I was told year in and year out, “there just isn’t enough wine for an email offer. Sorry, Nicholas.”
However, with the passing of Jim in 2018 and the winery’s recent sale, it appears as though there must have been a little wine tucked away somewhere.
If you’re looking for perfectly aged, ready to drink now, big plush Napa Valley Cabernet then today is you’re lucky day. Pulled from the back of the recently inventoried Summers cellar are the last 20 cases of the 2014 Summers Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Summers never much bothered with the wine press, though Wine Enthusiast did get a hold of this one and gave it a 93 and a glowing write up below.

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Billowy, expansive tannins build a foundation of power and structure in this wine, buoyed by bright underlying acidity. Floral and fleshy, it offers substantial flavors of cassis, black cherry and vanilla. It will do well in the cellar.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
