One of my favorite memories is running up the rugged hills of the Stolpman estate in Santa Barbara County. It’s a wild place, with jackrabbits the size of coyotes and a fun rope swing that drops you into a swimming hole where if you don’t scramble out fast enough, you are likely to get a bite or 2 from angry carp. Running through the estate is where you really get a sense for the limestone there, an utter rarity in CA and is absolutely one of the secrets to Pete Stolpman’s aromatically complex, vibrant wines.
His latest release, La Cuadrilla, is much more than a stylish, elegant blend of Syrah and Grenache. Each year, the Stolpman’s designate one block of the vineyard for the full time farm workers at the estate to manage entirely on their own. Staying within the general principles of the Stolpman farming philosophy, la cuadrilla or “the crew” make all the farming decisions, from pruning to harvest.
In return, the Stolpmans give 100% of the profits back to the workers. Pete says it’s the best motivational tool they could have ever put into place; this piece of ownership breeds loyalty and immense pride in their work.

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2019 La Cuadrilla is a blend of 70% Syrah, 15% Grenache and 15% Sangiovese. Medium ruby-purple, it opens with perfumed red and blue berry fruits with nuances of licorice and flowers. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with juicy fruits in a grainy frame, and it finishes long with loads of floral nuances.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
