96 Points, Vinous – 95 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Stephane has become a force in the Rhone and one of France’s brightest young stars with multiple 100-point wines to his name. His Côte-Rôties are some of the wine world’s most celebrated collectibles with the single-vineyard bottlings starting around $200/bottle and going up from there. This is one of those bottles, the 2016 Côte-Rôtie Lieu Dit La Viallière. It’s a masterpiece that racked up some huge scores from the two biggest publications in wine. Parker’s Wine Advocate says it “shows great freshness and energy.” Josh Raynolds of Vinous wrote that “Smoothness blends richness and delicacy and finishes strikingly long and youthfully tannic, leaving floral pastille and allspice notes behind.”

96 Points, Vinous
“Bright purple. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet displays mineral-driven dark berry, potpurri, exotic spice and incense qualities, and a smoky bacon nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and expansive on the palte, offering penetrating smoke-accented boysenberry, candied licorice, spicecake and candied violet flavors supported by a core of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends richness and delicacy and finishes strikingly long and youthfully tannic, leaving floral pastille and allspice notes behind.”

95 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Along with the other 2016s from Ogier, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Vialliere boasts gorgeous aromas of roses, tea leaves and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, plush and velvety on the palate, with a long, cranberry-ish finish that shows great freshness and energy. This offering is attractive now, but I expect it will age gracefully for at least 15 years.”

The seventh generation of Ogier winemakers in Cote Rotie, Stephane has a distinct advantage over virtually all competition with access to his family’s land throughout Cote Rotie’s most cherished vineyards in Lancement, Côte-Rozier, and La Viallière. But just because he was given a leg up doesn’t make him a good winemake… though making several 100-point rated wines certainly does!

Vinous’ Josh Raynolds couldn’t get enough, this is what he had to say after tasting through the full line-up:

From: Northern Rhône: 2016 and 2017 Reds (Sep 2019)
“Two thousand sixteen delivered what must be the most graceful and aromatically expressive set of wines that I have yet tasted from this important domaine, which is now named simply Stéphane Ogier. In Ogier’s view, 2016 “is a vintage that should be enjoyable at every stage of its life and that life should be quite long, longer than many people think.” No, it isn’t 2015, “but what is? 2010, maybe?” Ogier mused. The oak presence of the wines here has been dialed back dramatically over the years and Stéphane Ogier has now moved completely to using demi-muids and foudres with an eye to “making sure that each vineyard can express itself with as little in the way as possible.”
