Similarly to Tuscany, and how winemakers, money, and resources have flocked to Maremma as the next big thing – the Red Hills and Lake County in California is all the hot new rage. Located just north of Calistoga and just south of the Mendocino National Forest, the slightly cooler temps, unplanted land and volcanic and obsidian heavy soils are very attractive sales points.
The region has the big players from Napa lining up around the corner to get in. So far, Andy Beckstoffer has made a number of strategic investments up North. In the next few years, many will follow.
Before they do though, those who were first to the region can offer up some spectacular bargains. Today’s wine is the perfect example. Wine icon Jed Steele has been in Lake County since 1991 making wines. He identified the unknown region early as a place to make big, bold expressions of Cabernet that still remained balanced and well-structured. His 2019 Red Hills Cab is just that, and it’s perfect as we get into grill season.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This bold and tightly wound wine shows super concentrated black-cherry and dark-chocolate flavors laced with firm tannins that make it a bit mouthpuckering at this stage. But all that compact fruit in the middle should become more complex with time as the tannins soften. Best from 2025.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
