Sandro de Bruno Soave Veneto 2024

93 Points, James Suckling

This is high-altitude winemaking mixed with an incredible volcanic terroir does something special to Garganega. The altitude, the slope, the dramatic diurnal temperature swings – all of that work together to create a Soave with incredible precision and personality. James Suckling gave it 93 points, calling it “Very juicy, showing bright quince aromas with wet wool and broom flowers. Vibrant and tingling on the palate with good weight, with refreshing acidity and a grapefruit finish.” I’m calling it the kind of white wine that makes you wonder why you would ever drink anything else with seafood! A quintessential summer sipper!

A very juicy style, showing bright quince aromas with wet wool and broom flowers. Vibrant and tingling on the medium-bodied palate with good weight, refreshing acidity and a grapefruit finish. Drink or hold.

Sandro Tasoniero’s story is like out of one of Stephen Spielberg’s movies. Sando is a third generation winemaker who was pretty sure he didn’t even want to make wine, until his father unexpectedly passed away when Sandro was in his late thirties. Sandro was broken and that’s when everything changed. He decided to work a harvest in Chile in 2007, come back to Italy, and as soon as he returned he launched Sandro de Bruno that same year.

That was over 25 years ago. Nowadays he’s farming 11 hectares of organic vineyards at 600 meters above sea level on Mount Calvarin—a majestic active volcanic complex that emerged from the ancient Tethys Sea 40 million years ago. The locals affectionately refer to it as “the land of volcanoes.” You have to drive up a series of hair-rasing turns just to get up there. But once you do, it’s like you’ve unlocked the key to the castle and everything makes sense. The view from the top is breathtaking. So is the wine.
