I never know what’s going to happen when I go down to Kentucky. I had another one of those crazy encounters when I was doing a barrel pick at Jefferson’s. My barrel picks at Jefferson’s are always an adventure because Dan, the guy that runs the picks is a complete surfer stoner bro. And yes, he lives in Kentucky. Needless to say, all of his friends are also really interesting characters.
On this visit his buddy, Dave Carpenter from Redemption dropped by just to say “hi”. Turns out Dave is the master blender at Redemption so he’s kind of an important guy to get to know. We hit it off pretty well because in a former life he went to Culinary School and was a chef for 20 years. Dan the C.B.O (chief barrel officer) at Jefferson’s was getting a little miffed because Dave was Bogarting his time.
Don’t worry I spun that into a pretty unique Jefferson’s opportunity. More on that one next week. I landed an appointment with Dave the next day to taste through some of his best barrels. Somehow, I ended up having to cook lunch though. I think he worked me on this one. That said, I snagged an incredible single barrel that was 6 years old. Single barrel selections from Redemption are getting increasingly rarer as their profile is skyrocketing in the bourbon world. This one is bottled at 105 proof.

This is my Burgundy discovery of the year. The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge features a perfumed and very pretty nose that reflects notes of ripe berries, violets, and a touch of earth. The fruit is so detailed and pure, a hallmark of this special vintage, with excellent energy that finishes a mile long.
The third release of three batches from Booker’s Bourbon 2023 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2023-03 ‘Might Fine Batch.’ These mini-releases have become extremely popular, and for good reason. “The vanilla and brown sugar sweet notes come through very well from the white oak barrels this bourbon aged in for over seven years. The taste is great and full bodied; when I added a splash of water, it opened up some great flavors, with a finish that gives a lovely “Kentucky Hug. My Dad would say that this is a Mighty Fine batch of Booker’s.” -Fred Noe
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from Aleramici hits all the right notes. It has a nice medium weight to it with easy drinking cherry, creme de cassis and purple fruits. It’s multi-dimensional with waves of some dark plum and blackberry with more sage and spice components as well that compliment it perfectly.
Back in the day, Widow Jane used to be a staple at Nicholas Wines. But as its popular has gone crazy, it’s been tougher and tougher to get my hands on any. This is a hyper small batch bourbon that was aged for a minimum of thirteen years, non-chill filtered and proofed with Widow Jane’s signature limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines in New York. It’s a doozy of a bottle at 93 Proof and has notes of vanilla, nutmeg, graham cracker and sweet tobacco.
