Since 1849, Rebel has boasted an original, award-winning recipe has been made using only the purest Kentucky limestone-filtered water and new charred white oak barrels for aging. This gives them a distinct advantage over most everyone.
When I was down at Lux Row in January, I couldn’t wait to pick out my own single barrel of their Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon.
What is a wheated bourbon you ask? Well it’s a bourbon that uses wheat instead of rye to mix with the corn in the mashbill. There are a few bourbons that come from Kentucky that use wheat in their mashbills. Perhaps you’ve heard of a few of them, Weller, Old Fitzgerald, oh & Pappy Van Winkle. I love a wheated bourbon because they deliver more depth of flavor & an almost creamy mouth feel.
My single barrel from Rebel is much different from the single barrel Cask Strength that Rebel usually puts into the market. This is a 120 Proof beauty that was born in March of 2017. I love the way this one came together. The molasses, gingerbread, vanilla, oak and spice combination here is so smooth and effortless. This is a beauty.

The third release of three batches from Booker’s Bourbon 2023 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2023-03 ‘Might Fine Batch.’ These mini-releases have become extremely popular, and for good reason. “The vanilla and brown sugar sweet notes come through very well from the white oak barrels this bourbon aged in for over seven years. The taste is great and full bodied; when I added a splash of water, it opened up some great flavors, with a finish that gives a lovely “Kentucky Hug. Now some of the best Pinot Noir in the world comes from the Yamhill-Carlton District (this small neck of the woods has earned its own AVA) and specifically from Shea Vineyards. Big name wineries clamor for fruit: Antica Terra, Beaux Freres, Bergstrom, Penner-Ash, & Sine Qua Non, to name a few. This Pinot is lights out and even given the pedigree, drinks several echelons higher. Blueberry, Blackberry, Blue Cheese (?!?), chanterelle mushrooms, lavender, mint – I could go on. It’s literally got it all, but I won’t spoil it for you.
This is my third private barrel of Bourbon that I sourced from Bulleit and my first since 2022. Believe you me, they give you a ton (and I mean a ton) of samples to go through to make up for lost time. The winning combo is something people are going to love. Allow me to introduce you to Barrel #5-B3-82. It’s smooth and layered, with a full creamy mouthfeel and manages to sneak in at 104 Proof. On the nose, I get fresh cut oak, vanilla and brown butter. On the palate, freshly baked banana bread, burnt orange and graham cracker.
