José Manuel Martínez’s brilliant 2018 Quinta de Couselo O Rosal is an absolutely electric white wine. It’s old-school Spanish white wine, located just north of Portugal in the O Rosal district of Rias Baixas. It’s a coastal wine, sourced from ancient Albarino vines that are precariously set in hillsides of sheer slate. Jose has never used chemicals in his vineyards and does everything by hand. This is vibrant, saline Albariño with a stony minerality that makes it both fantastic with anything from the sea but also just as good to start any meal as a mouth-watering apertif. This wine will sing to you, don’t miss it.

Sitting on the Miño river which separates Spain and Portugal, Couselo’s soils contain slate which is extremely rare for the sub-zone.

Pair with Barnegat sea scallops, grilled shrimp, any flaky white fish or just by itself as the perfect aperitif.
Trust me, this is a fantastic Menetou-Salon. It’s one of those quintessential bottlings from the tiny region that perfectly exemplifies the early sweet and stone fruit flavors that you get backed by some racy acidty and an absolutely to die for mineral streak. This one comes from the coveted Kimmeridgian limestone terroir and vines that are all at least 40 years in age. That gives this so much energy, concentration and lift – it’s a treat!
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
