Last year, Quilceda Creek celebrated their 40th anniversary. Arguably, you could say that no other domestic winery has enjoyed the success they’ve been able to achieve. The first winery outside of California to earn 100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has done so on seven different occasions from that publication alone(!), with a handful of other wine writers and expert reviewers offering up perfect scores as well.
In fact, there really is no feat that this Washington Winery hasn’t achieved. Easily considered the best winery in the state (and dubbed so by Parker’s Wine Advocate), they have made three Top 10 appearances on Wine Spectator’s Annual Top 100 list and they even had their Cabernet poured at the White House in a dinner with then President Obama and President at Hu Jintao of China in 2011.
This year they have a 100-point review yet again and a 99-point review from Parker’s Wine Advocate that sure sounds like a 100-point review…
“Flirting with perfection, instantly impressive and marked with impeccable shine and polish, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon from Champoux vineyard (90%) and Mach One vineyard (10%). The Cabernet explodes out of a glass with exuberance and power, prancing with layers of juicy black fruit, plum compote, black raspberry jus and hints of cinnamon-spiced black cherries. Full-bodied and with a ripe attack, velvety tannins sway with a glossy mouthfeel that is seductive and hedonistic, and the wine displays a balanced structure with a generous frame. It somersaults to an ever-evolving finish that bursts with layers of complexity, finesse and richness. What a stunning bottle! Bravo! Two thumbs up!”

“Quilceda Creek’s Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is once again a spectacular release of this legendary Washington wine. Sourced from Champoux and Mach One vineyards, this begins to impress with its extremely attractive aromas of ripe dark cherries, currants and plums, which are accompanied by lovely nuances of violets, baking spices, savory herbs, gravel, and damp earth characteristics all taking shape. The palate is every bit as stunning, boasting a gorgeous full-body that is structured with beautifully polished, fine-grained tannins that are nicely integrated. Displaying wonderful overall balance and concentration along with remarkable purity and craftsmanship, the 2019 has it all. This is one of the finest vintages of the Columbia Valley Cabernet that I have had the chance to taste. Even at this infant stage this is an absolute knockout and it is certainly destined for a brilliant evolution ahead.”

“Sourced mainly from the Champoux vineyard (90%) with a smaller part from the Mach One vineyard, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley utilizes clones 4, 8, 191, 337 and 685 with mostly clone 8 selections in the blend. Incredibly aromatic right now, it shows gorgeous black rose petals, crème de violette, sagebrush, black walnut, sandalwood and blueberry compote tones, giving a level of aromatic complexity that is unrivaled in the state. The palate is silky and elegant with a downright soft texture. Deeply concentrated and wonderfully structured, with smooth tannins, this gorgeous wine is already beautifully evolved at the two-year mark and will continue to deliver drinking enjoyment for at least another 15 years. Drink 2021-2041”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
