If you’ve ever made the drive to the very top of Mount St. Helena then you know. If you haven’t then you should, and if you do, book a visit at the summit with Pride Mountain Vineyards (appointments are required by county law there).
The property straddles the Napa/Sonoma line – there’s a brick line that crossed through the crush pad. The views are amazing. The soil is unique and distinctive, and the wines highly collectable.
2019 was a near perfect vintage there. Early spring provided just enough rain to build up some small reserves which protected the vines from the occasional heat spikes. A mild fall allowed for an extremely generous picking schedule allowing each grape to be picked at optimum maturity.
This is your textbook contemplative Cabernet. Big, bold, and brash mountain fruit displaying a medley of dark fruits highlighted by Bing Cherries, ripe plum but with underlying tones of aged tobacco, sandalwood, and dark chocolate.
It’s a phenomenal Cabernet that is usually pretty highly allocated.

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!

The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
