The last time PlumpJack’s Winery tasked winemaker Jeff Owens with making an inaugural release for their portfolio, he did so to the tune of 100-points with the release of the 2012 Odette Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon.
So when Plumpjack decided they wanted to make the best under $100 Napa Valley Cabernet with their new Adaptation Cabernet, it was no surprise who got the nod to make it. As competitive as any winemaker in Napa, Owens is always trying to make the best wine. His wines typically tend to be energetic, expressive and super approachable – all great qualities that tend to bode especially well for scoring, since the wines rarely “need a decade in a bottle” before they start to show who they are.
The Adaptation Cabernet allows Owens to make a Cabernet with other Bordeaux varietals from a collection of the top vineyards from across the valley. This is PlumpJack’s “Quilt” so to speak. It features Cabernet along the Silverado Trail in Stag’s Leap from their own Odette Vineyards as well as Heitz’s Trailside Vineyard, to go with fruit from St. Helena, Chaix’s vineyard in Rutherford, Merlot from the rocky terrain of Howell Mountain, along with fruit from Oak Knoll, and Carneros.
Opaque to the rim with sweet blackberry, wild cherries, plums, cocoa and creme de cassis with notes of violet on the nose. It’s wonderfully rich and full-bodied with expressive aromas, ripe fruit and a wonderfully silky texture. This is a big boy, yet very elegant and refined with nuance and waves of depth that suggest that even though it’s killer now, it might still be a few years away from its prime. It’s going to win a lot of people over.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
