Decanter’s #1 Rated Wine Oregon Pinot of 2017 and The Winery’s Highest Score Ever For their Estate Pinot
After working for some of Napa’s premier wineries and Rex Hill Vineyards in Oregon, winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and her husband, Ron, started Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in 1998. They picked arguably the most beautiful location in the valley (an absolute must-visit if you’re in the Willamette Valley) on top of a hill in the revered Yamhill Carlton AVA. Seriously, just look at some of these pictures for a taste of what paradise looks like.
In the winery, the focus is on small-lot indigenous yeast fermentation with extended cold soaks to extract a rich, fruit-focused, textured mouth feel. The wines are always lights out, but especially in cooler vintages, where their ideal sun exposure mixed with the cool ocean breeze coming off the Van Duzer Corridor help shape some of the most beautiful, age-worthy Pinots in the States.
This is a gorgeous wine from Oregon’s top female winemaker, Lynn Penner-Ash and her winemaking team. In what was a cooler 2017 vintage, this Yamhill-Carlton based high-altitude really shines with incredibly beautiful and vibrant fruit. Bright, clean notes of red and blue fruits shine through, cherries, cranberries, blueberries and raspberry notes. There’s a seamless balance to this wine with a lot of poise and depth and absolutely no rough edges at all. This silky smooth Pinot represents some of the very best Oregon has to offer. It’s why it was the only 96-point score that Decanter gave in 2017 for an American Pinot. Total class.

96 Points, Decanter
Located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars was founded in 1998 by husband and wife team Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash. The first female winemaker in Oregon (at Rex Hill Vineyards in 1988), Lynn Penner-Ash focuses on small-lot indigenous yeast fermentation with extended cold soaks to extract rich, fruit-focused, wines. The Estate Pinot Noir is sourced from the Estate vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton AVA, next to the sustainable, gravity-flow estate winery, built in 2005. The wine sees 10 months of ageing in 34% new French oak.
93 Points, James Suckling
There’s an impressive sense of ripe, dense dark cherries on this Estate Vineyard bottling, delivering a very attractive nose and plenty of deep flavors on the palate. Smooth, fluid and even-paced, this has good potential.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
