The 2019 Para Maria de los Tecolotes Rosé (affectionately named after Ruben’s wife and partner, Maria) is 100% Syrah, salmon-pink in color, with a great nose of ruby red grapefruit and red apple. Bone-dry and low in alcohol it is a classic Rosé very much like the first one Melissa and I discovered on a trip to the south of France many, many years ago. Drink with just about anything this spring and summer but if you really want to be reminded of Santa Barbara County’s finest…..just a good juicy burger.

From what I have tasted, pretty much anything involving Ruben has a massive headstart on the way to greatness.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
At 350 feet above sea level, growing seasons are often extended with warm days and cool, breezy nights. The diurnal changes of temperature help create healthy vines and grapes that are packed full of complexity, concentration and energy. Ain’t a whole of Provence wineries that can compare. We’ve offered Val de Caire’s spectacular Provence Rouge before, but their bread and butter wine, the Coteaux d’Aix en-Provence Rose has finally been imported into the U.S. for the first time. People are gonna go nuts for this wine.
Our all-time favorite Chardonnay is back for its 30th anniversary bottling in the excellent 2022 vintage. The Wagner Family’s Santa Lucia Highlands Reserve slam dunk. This is one that Nicholas Wines readers can’t get enough of – it always delivers. It leads with an inviting nose with fresh citrus and lemon notes. It’s always juicy, bright and well-balanced – it’s classic Caymus, rich and hedonistic with a wonderful creaminess. This is quintessential California Chardonnay.
98 Points, Vinous
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Ygnacia Hyde Vineyard is another magnificent wine from Hyde De Villaine. Vertical, deep and explosive, the 2021 possesses tremendous depth from start to finish. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, pomegranate, and spice notes are all beautifully amplified. The 2021 was done with fully destemmed fruit, sourced from 2.5 acres planted in 2010 with four different selections. What stands out most in the wine’s natural concentration.” -Vinous
