The Pasquero-Elia family has been making wine for several centuries, but the last few decades in particular have helped separate them from their competition as one of the absolute best in Piedmont. Parker’s Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni have taken notice in a big way.
Galloni summed up their greatness in one sentence. “The Pasquero-Elia family has superb vineyards and already knew how to craft delicious wines, but the continued search for excellence and the willingness to invest in the future is what separates the true greats from the merely good and excellent producers.” Parker’s Wine Advocate added on, “The Pasquero-Elia family has made fabulous wines for years, but now they are in a position to challenge for one of the very top spots in Barbaresco.“ Their dedication and obsession with perfection makes them kinda like the Piedmont version of Alabama football. Every year, you can expect they’ll be great.
I am the first in New Jersey or New York to bring in the Paitin’s Barbera d’Alba Serra from the 2019 vintage. Maybe it’s because I’ve been selling their wines for two and a half decades, that probably helped.
Regardless, I’m excited to bring you this exclusive jet black, inky Barbera that folks are going to love. Already armed with a 92-point score from Parker’s Wine Advocate and a 91-point score from Vinous, this new release is already a hit.
The ‘Serra’ blend comes from the fresher, more delicate slope of the Serraboella. It’s richer and more opulent than most Barberas, especially for anywhere near the price. But the key is the freshness and balance of the wine that makes them so dang delicious. Parker says you’re left with the memory of the “pristine nature of its fruit”. When you’ve got some of the best fruit in the region with a superstar cast making the wine– you’re going to end up with some great juice.
That’s what you’ve got here.

92 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
You get tremendous value from the Paitin 2019 Barbera d’Alba Serra, which is fruity and bright but beautifully elegant as well. Barbera is known for its rich black fruit flavors and accessible personality, so it’s a real treat to taste a wine that puts so much emphasis on the smaller details offered by the grape. These include tart blueberry, white cherry, exotic spice and crushed stone. There is some softness on the close, but the wine will be remembered for the linear and pristine nature of its fruit.
91 Points, Antonio Galloni – Vinous
The 2019 Barbera d’Alba Serra is fresh, floral and fruity, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years. Short aging in cask really exalts the fruit in this translucent, classically built Barbera. Red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and orange peel linger.

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
