I was invited June 2019 to Old Forester to watch them bottle their Birthday Bourbon. Jackie knows it’s my all time favorite. I even get a whopping 6 bottles for myself. It kicks the crap out Pappy. The Birthday bourbon is a blend of 12 of Jackie’s favorite barrels each year & bottled at cask strength & comes from level 3 of the rickhouse. Every visit I have begged for them to release a barrel at cask strength to me. I get a quick no chance. On this visit I noticed my name hangs on the wall in the tasting room as the #1 restaurant buyer of Old Forester in the world.
Believe me I used this in my negotiations to absolutely no avail. But my ‘no’ changed to a ‘yes’ when Jackie had to cancel her trip here in March for this little virus thing thats going round. She felt bad for us as NJ was the epicenter. Ha, little did she/we know at that time what was yet to come. So for the first time in history this is your chance to taste & own a cask strength Old Forester unless you have the Birthday bourbon but even that one is a blend while this is a single barrel.
Will it cost the $595 that the BB cost??? Nope, this one is only $95.
Rickhouse- L
Level 3 ( of course)
Proof- cask Strength- a massive 127.9
This one is for true bourbon lovers. You will need to add a tsp of water to open this baby up.
Act quick I’m only releasing 100 bottles of this barrel. The rest will be reserved for Barrel & Roost. No judgements if you see me sitting at the end of the bar on Sunday nights drinking straight from the bottle. I am Giants fan after all!

I once again found myself with one of the more and limited bottlings from the good people at Michter’s It comes in a round 111 Proof and is a monster from one of the best distilleries out there. This bottling is usually between 107 and 112 Proof but isn’t made every year (only in the good years). It’s oozing with seductive aromas of Cinnamon, rye spice, chocolate and freshly baked gingerbread. Cinnamon, dark chocolate, a hint of Cayenne pepper mixed with charred sugar and oak explode out of the bottle and greet you head on. I wish I had more than six of these beauties to pass out. Such is life.
Grappa di Sassicaia is a distillate of Cabernet Sauvignon with a small % of Cab franc pumace from vines on the actual estate of Tenuta San Guido. It’s made from one of the oldest operating stills in all of Italy. The fresh marc is soft pressed from the skins immediately following the wine’s maceration phase and then right after that distillation starts up. After the cauldron gets emptied and the cycle is reinitiated, the heads and tails are eliminated so that the heart of the grappa preserves the purest spectrum of primary aromas and flavors. The finished spirit spends four years aging in French oak barriques. It’s a spirit that has both fruity and herbal elements from Cabernet but is also toasty and restrained with tons of nuance and depth. It’s a classy bottle – unfortunately, I only have one!
Bulleit isn’t usually one to come out with too many new or limited releases, but the ‘Frontier’ Limited Release bucks that trend. This American Single Malt was made with 100% malted barley, aged in new American spiced oak casks, and bottled at 43% alcohol. It hits with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, candied orange, dried fruits, and maple syrup. She’s a beauty – just wish I had more to sell!
Back in the day, Widow Jane used to be a staple at Nicholas Wines. But as its popular has gone crazy, it’s been tougher and tougher to get my hands on any. This is a hyper small batch bourbon that was aged for a minimum of thirteen years, non-chill filtered and proofed with Widow Jane’s signature limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines in New York. It’s a doozy of a bottle at 93 Proof and has notes of vanilla, nutmeg, graham cracker and sweet tobacco.
