If you’ve ever been to Northern Italy, specifically the Alto Adige region, you know that wine is not a job but a way of life. That’s especially true of Bolzano, a beautiful hillside town that serves as the gateway to the Dolomites. There’s a famous Italian old saying, “Venice floats on water, Bolzano floats on wine.” If you’ve been there you know why. Vineyards run through district lines, through town centers, through everywhere.
If you want to find the very best wines from the region, you look for sun soaked plateaus and southern facing slopes — but really you don’t have to look any further than the monastery that sits on the edge of town belonging to Muri Gries.
For over a century, monastery life and vineyard life have been inextricably intertwined. Their steadfast devotion to the land and the grapes has produced wines of extraordinary flavor. Certainly not ones for pomp and circumstance, the wines have largely flown under the radar.
Quality Pinot Grigio from the Dolomite Mountain range of Alto Adige can often approach thirty bucks and frankly many are well worth it. But at today’s price, this is a case buy.

90 Points, Vinous Media
The 2019 Pinot Grigio lifts from the glass in a pretty display of ripe peach with a lemon twist, crushed stone and hints of morning dew. There’s a textural interplay, as silky waves are contrasted by citrus-tinged acids and minerals, which also adds liveliness to its ripe orchard fruits. The palate aches for another sip throughout the cheek-puckering finish. This is an excellent, energetic Pinot Grigio that may be even better after six months to a year in the cellar.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
This is a Nicholas Faithful favorite. Even though it’s technically a non-vintage it was last disgorged in the 2020 vintage. La Cravantine, is a sparkling rosé of 100% Cabernet Franc, bone-dry, super fresh and with bubbles so tiny and fine, it puts most “real” Champagne to shame. Appealing strawberry and mineral scents are encased in a firm structure with a dry and spicy quality in the palate. This wine is incredibly versatile – perfect with just about any fish, fried food, or do like I do and enjoy it on it’s own.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
