Upon its being named ‘Whisky of the Year’ for 2019 by The Whisky Exchange, Michter’s US 1 Sour Mash Whiskey became the first whiskey in the U.S. to take home the honor.
This is super rare and super small batch bottling. It starts with that special Sour Mash blend which gets aged, then they age it again in a second custom made barrel. That barrel is assembled from 18 months of air-dried wood, and then toasted but not charred. Several different toast levels were evaluated before ultimately Master Distiller Dan McKee locking into something fantastic.
Bottled at 86 Proof, this one is heavy with toffee, French vanilla notes with some cocoa, sweet oak and a splash of orange peel. It’s bold and intense with a slight spicy and elegant finish. Most people I’ve spoken to can’t get a hold of any of this. I looked at the average price online and we’re just about $115/bottle less than that price – so don’t wait too long to scoop up a bottle.

Back in the day, Widow Jane used to be a staple at Nicholas Wines. But as its popular has gone crazy, it’s been tougher and tougher to get my hands on any. This is a hyper small batch bourbon that was aged for a minimum of thirteen years, non-chill filtered and proofed with Widow Jane’s signature limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines in New York. It’s a doozy of a bottle at 93 Proof and has notes of vanilla, nutmeg, graham cracker and sweet tobacco.
The juice here is so pure and elegant, it tastes much more like a $80/bottle of Tequila than one going for half the price, but that’s why I love these single barrel deals so much. The value is insane. This Reposado spent just under 12 months in used bourbon barrels. Golden brown with fresh agave, oak & vanilla. Remarkably smooth finish. This is one of those oddball tequila’s that is good enough to just sip on the rocks but cheap enough to use to make one hell of a margarita.
This is my third private barrel of Bourbon that I sourced from Bulleit and my first since 2022. Believe you me, they give you a ton (and I mean a ton) of samples to go through to make up for lost time. The winning combo is something people are going to love. Allow me to introduce you to Barrel #5-B3-82. It’s smooth and layered, with a full creamy mouthfeel and manages to sneak in at 104 Proof. On the nose, I get fresh cut oak, vanilla and brown butter. On the palate, freshly baked banana bread, burnt orange and graham cracker.
Bulleit isn’t usually one to come out with too many new or limited releases, but the ‘Frontier’ Limited Release bucks that trend. This American Single Malt was made with 100% malted barley, aged in new American spiced oak casks, and bottled at 43% alcohol. It hits with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, candied orange, dried fruits, and maple syrup. She’s a beauty – just wish I had more to sell!
