I first discovered Michele Chiarlo many moons ago – not because of the wines but through shots of Grappa, often passed around after a long shift. This liquor made from whatever was left over after all the wine was made was used in part to pay the field workers who helped with the harvest.
Michele Chiarlo was founded back in 1956 by Michele and Giuseppina Chiarlo. The son of over seven generations of esteemed wine growers, Mr. Chiarlo is today one of the most respected producers of the fine wines of Piedmont and a leading figure in its viticultural industry.
At the production and vineyard level, where quality begins, Michele Chiarlo has for thirty years pursued an endless search for control over the finest vineyard sites in each of the zones from which he produces his wines. Their newly released ‘Le Orme’ Barbera that we are offering up, represents what will easily be one of the finer values in all of Piedmont this year.
94 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast
This is a CLASSIC Barbera. Vibrant and bright aromas of wild berries, fresh herbs and purple flowers all showcase the beauty of this wine. The palate shows high-toned red cherries and raspberries framed by elegant and fine tannins with that perfect pop of acidity on the finish.
90 Points (Stellar Value), Wine Spectator
The 2020 Barbera d’Asti Le Orme is bright and effusive. An explosion of ripe red cherry fruit, herbs, spice, mint, licorice and dried herbs gives the Orme its charming, alluring personality. Aging this one in steel keeps the flavors bright
89 Points, Vinous
Rich and bursting with black cherry, blackberry and plum flavors. Features flashes of earth and almond as this stays balanced and fresh through the finish. Drink now through 2026.
