Too often, Beaujolais is viewed as a region for easy sippin’ without any thought needed, good fruity and fresh red wines that can be interchangeable from domaine to domaine. But Guignier’s Beaujolais are far from ordinary, and his winemaking prowess is also shoulders above most of his peers.
Guignier is a fourth generation vigneron in Ville Morgon in the heart of the Beaujolais Cru of Morgon. As he will gladly tell you, he is fortunate to work with extremely old vines for the region (up to 75 years old) and every single one is tended by hand. These wines are just bright and enjoyable wines to drink but they’re also pure, soil-driven beauties that are amongst the very best made in the region each year.
Of course the New York Times’ Eric Asimov is all over it – featuring his entry-level Beaujolais in his 20 under $20 ‘Finding Bargains Amid Inflation’ feature, declaring that the wine “rises above the potential of the straightforward Beaujolais appellation”. He also called out “unexpected depth” which speaks volumes (no pun intended) to what Guignier’s savvy old-vines yield.
Unsurprisingly, the hardest working wine critic also got his hands on this one, giving a 90-point rave review in which he calls out the ‘balance of fresh and ripe elements’. All of this for a wine that checks in for under $20! A steal in Southern Burgundy.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
