The Conero region in Marche has winemaking roots tracing back to the 10th Century B.C. and the Etruscan period. Though Abruzzo gets much of the credit for Montepulciano, it is this staple in Northern Italy known for its chalky, limestone soils as well as birthing the famous winemaker, Cesare Mondavi that makes the most expressive versions of the grape.
For the past 500 years, one of the only continuous family owned wineries in the region is run by the Malacari family. The family has always been heavily focused on Montepulciano, with production of the grape dating back to the 1600’s. In recent years, the Family enlisted the help of winemaking expert Sergio Paolucci and began more selectively picking the fruit and the blends for their signature Rosso Conero DOC “Villa Malacari”.
Their 2016 Rosso Conero (100% old-vine Montepulciano) might be one of their best iterations of all time. It’s a WOW wine- once you take the first sip you’ll know what I mean. Eric Guido of Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media raved, giving it 92 points and calling it “long and structured, yet still quite fresh” and “a mouthful of gorgeous Montepulciano fruit and a real value score as well”.

92 Points, Vinous Media
The 2016 Malacari Rosso Conero explodes from the glass with a mix of ripe cherries and blueberries, complemented by hints of cinnamon and clove and a grounding note of fresh bay leaves. It floods the palate with silky richness, ushering in dark ripe fruits and spice in a round and deeply satisfying expression, as fine tannins slowly settle in. The finish is long and structured, yet still quite fresh, balanced by residual acids with a purple floral air, and hints of wild berry lingering on. Wow, this is a mouthful of gorgeous Montepulciano fruit, and it’s a real value score as well.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
